Black Business Spotlight: Chef Oya's The Trap Seafood

In the mood for seafood? We know a great spot that will leave you wanting more. As we continue to highlight Indianapolis black-owned businesses, may we introduce you to Chef Oya’s The Trap.

Chef Oya has made quite a name for herself and some may know her as the seafood queen of Indianapolis. That is such a fitting title for this amazing business owner.

We recently had the opportunity to talk to Oya and learn a bit more about her business.

Some of you may be wondering what the story is behind the name.

The Trap name was inspired by the neighborhood she grew up in and it represents what she has called home for years. Born and raised in Nap town, Oya began selling seafood trays from her porch just down the street from her current restaurant.

TRAP also stands Toward Restoring Food Access to the People. She began cooking at a very young age and knew that she wanted to be a sportscaster or cook on television.

Oya grew up taking drama and acting classes in school but ended up attending culinary school. We are so grateful she did because the Trap is a staple spot in the city.

She is a local advocate for healthy food options and making them more accessible for the community of people she loves. Her passion to cook and create delicious meals is wonderful but her passion to provide access is inspiring.

You know what makes a great business? The customer service and sense of family. When asked what makes her establishment special she said that “there are people who come in that I am on a first-name basis with.”

You don’t make those types of connections by staying behind the scenes. Oya is extremely involved with every aspect of her business and that keeps clients coming back for more.

She also said that her favorite thing about her business is her love to feed people.

The fact that people pay me to feed them is a dream come true.”

The Trap has been around for 3 years and we know she will be around for many more. She is located at 3355 N Keystone Ave, Indianapolis, IN.

Let’s talk a little about being a leader and trendsetter. Before Oya opened her business there were no other places in the city that really offered seafood boil options. She is the Trap Mogul and opened the door for seafood in Indianapolis. To date, there are more than 20 other places that offer seafood boil options, but she paved the way.

Okay, so I know the question you’re asking yourself now is “what should I order when I go there?”

Oya obviously knows that her whole menu is great but she said that the crab leg and shrimp tray are a must. The Trap Chowder is also an extremely popular item.

How can you access food during the pandemic? There are a few ways. Throughout the week they are offering carryout only. She also bottles and sells her sauces so make sure you grab some of those too.

Another option is Trap at home on Sunday’s which is a meal prep option. The menu is different every week and you cook it at home.  You can place your order and pick it up on Sunday. What a great way to spend a Sunday right?

Oya, we love having your business in the city and can’t wait to watch your continued success.

Haven’t tried The Trap out yet? What a better day than #BlackoutDay2020 to support local black business.
