Carmel’s Sun King is more than just beer

Sun King Spirits, a new distillery from Indiana’s most well-known brewery, opened last week in Carmel. Don’t worry, the beer is still heavily featured along with many new options. Sun King isn’t producing their own spirits quite yet though. Instead they’ve collaborated with several well-known Indiana distillers like Cardinal Spirits, Hotel Tango, Hard Truth, Starlight and West Fork Whiskey – offering various takes on traditional and craft cocktails, flights, slushies and virgin options.

The distillery is more than good drinks. There’s a food-hall with three vendors — Oca, La Margarita, and Pi Indy.

Oca, a spin-off collaboration from Smoking Goose Meatery, first landed at downtown Indy’s Sun King Brewery last November, serving a variety of sandwiches, sausages and charcuterie. Although similar in concept the new location sports a larger, new menu. All dishes have been created with Sun King’s beverage options in mind.

As you enter you’ll also find La Margarita, a local Mexican restaurant, just to the left. Their reduced menu features tacos, burritos and sides. Upstairs you’ll find Pi Indy, a food truck turned artisan pizzeria, as well as another bar, private space and a rooftop patio. Known for having one of the most recognizable food trucks, Pi Indy’s meat toppings are sourced directly from Smoking Goose.

Sun King is a welcome addition to the area — which is seeing tons of new development. Construction is under way right in front of the distillery for a greenway complete with a splash park. Anthony’s Chophouse and 3UP will also open just a block away later this summer.
